What Type of Hot Tub Should You Get?

Hot tubs or spas are a great addition for both your health and leisure. A hot tub is a good place to unwind after a long day and you can invite guests into your home for dinner… and have a bath afterward. However, although hot tubs have numerous benefits, you should make sure you know the type you want. There are four main types of spas, including:

  • Above-ground
  • Inflatable
  • Wooden
  • In-ground

  • Above-Ground Hot Tubs
These prefabricated hot tubs are often manufactured from molded acrylic that is backed by ABS plastic or fiberglass. It is surrounded by durable synthetic, but the newer models are constructed entirely from rotationally molded plastic that is also known as roto-mold. This material is preferable because it is inexpensive, lightweight, tough, and is available in a variety of colors. Roto-molded hot tubs are often small and can hold a total of six people. There are also stainless steel above-ground tubs which are not very common. Stainless steel tubs are very expensive because of the durable and attractive material used in their manufacture.

Above-ground tubs range in price depending on if you choose a simple roto-mold spa or a high-end acrylic hot tub with genuine wood cabinets, among other features. Above –ground spas should be installed on a stable and well-leveled surface such as a concrete pad. Other above-ground hot tub models need a 220-volt vent. If you already have a suitable site that has the required plumbing and electrical outlets, you will not incur too much in installation costs.

Above-ground tubs are often said to be portable. A portable roto-mold tub can be set up on top of a deck during summer and moved to the basement during winter. However, tubs that are over 225 pounds cannot be easily moved.

    Inflatable Hot Tubs
These tubs are a more portable option compared to above-ground. They are commonly made of vinyl and are transported while deflated. They can be installed easily on any surface and level, outside or indoors. The tub is accompanied by a motor and a hose during purchase. You inflate the tub using the motor and fill hose, and then plug in the heater. Inflatable hot tubs are easy to transport and you don't have to worry about special delivery when moving. These types of tubs are the most affordable and they can cost less than $500. The inflatable hot tubs have some disadvantages. The vinyl material can get damaged easily, and the inflatable spas often rely on blowers than hot water jets that are used in more upscale models.

    Wooden Hot Tubs
These types of hot tubs are likened to traditional wooden wine casks. They are built using cedar, redwood, or teak and often have a round design. These tubs are also transported in pieces and assembled on site. Therefore, they can be moved through doorways and down or upstairs to the ideal location. Acrylic tubs are bulkier and cannot fit through narrow spaces.

Most homeowners choose to purchase the wooden hot tubs due to their aesthetic appearance and durable construction. While they don't have the contoured seating that is common in other types of spas, they are deeper and have more leg room. The depth also affects buoyancy. However, because they hold large volumes of water, they are very heavy and should be placed on a base of solid concrete or a reinforced deck. Unlike other types of hot tubs, wooden tubs can be heated with wood, gas, or electricity. The price range is from $3500 to $10,000.

    In-Ground Hot Tubs
These are the most expensive type of spas because they require plumbing, excavation, and electrical work during installation. The price range is between $14,000 and $20,000. They are manufactured using gunite and sometimes overlaying tiles are used for decoration. Although these spas may not be as energy efficient and don't have as many jets compared to above-ground tubs, you can pick one that uses a gas heater to save on energy bills. In-ground spas are permanent and they can significantly increase the value of your house. The only downside is that you cannot take it with you if you decide to move.

If you are planning to purchase a hot tub, choose one that fits all your needs, and that falls within your budget. You can also consider your long-term goals, for instance, raising the value of your property. Installing a hot tub in your home is a surefire way to make your home a comfort zone.
