Many people assume that they don't need to maintain their hot tub during the winter season, but caring for the product can increase its lifespan and will improve its functionality. Those who want to maintain the hot tub can take several steps to ensure that it runs well once spring arrives. For those who want to take care of the product, there are a few important steps to take.
Check the Water Levels
When you haven't used the hot tub in several weeks, it's important to check the water levels to avoid having the pump and heater shut down. This can cause frozen water to quickly develop within several hours, making it important to monitor the levels to avoid damage to the tub.

You'll also want to clean the water by changing it out before the temperatures drop outside and cleaning the interior of the tub. This can be difficult to do once the winter season arrives, making it important to take the step at the end of the fall season.

It's also important to check the temperature of the water to determine if you need to turn on the heat from time to time.

Use a Durable Cover
One of the most important steps to take during the winter season is to use a quality hot tub cover that will reduce the energy usage of the product once the cover is locked on. It's important to look for a cover that offers a significant amount of insulation to prevent heat loss. A floating thermal blanket is also effective and can be placed on top of the water to reduce the cost of energy by keeping heat in and preventing it from escaping. The cover will not only reduce the cost of energy but will also prevent environmental elements entering the tub. Although a cover will do most of the work, you still want to remove excess snow that develops on top to keep the water warm each day.

Remove the Filters
You can provide a high level of care for the hot tub by changing out the filters. Pull out the filters and clean them if they're still in good condition. They need to be replaced if they look like they've deteriorated or are no longer durable. After removing the filters, they can be cleaned and dried before they're stored away. Use a cleaning solution before it's time to clean the filter basket to ensure that dirt and grime are properly removed.

Drain the Blow Jets
Caring for your hot tub during the winter means that you'll need to thoroughly drain the water that can get trapped in the blow jets. You can drain the water manually or even use a shop vac to remove any moisture that is present.

Keep the Chemicals Stored
When the product is not in use, it's important to keep the chemicals stored in a dry location that is out of reach from children during the winter season.

Read the Manual
Reading the manual that came with your hot tub will make it easier to determine warnings or symbols that appear during the season with the controls to ensure that everything runs well and can be repaired immediately if a problem develops.

Although your hot tub may not be used as much during the winter season, it's still important to care for it to ensure that it continues to function. With the right steps taken, you can protect the tub from damage and get plenty of use out of it for many years to come.
